১৭ বছর বয়সী আবদুল কাইয়ুম আহাদ কোনো রাজনীতি করত না; পড়ত না কোনো স্কুল কিংবা মাদ্রাসায়। জীবিকার তাগিদে মাধ্যমিকের গণ্ডি পার হওয়ার আগেই গ্রাম ছেড়ে রাজধানী ঢাকায় পাড়ি জমায় সে। যাত্রাবাড়ীতে সে রেফ্রিজারেটর ও শীতাতপ নিয়ন্ত্রণ যন্ত্র (এসি) মেরামতের কাজ শিখত। কিন্তু তার কাজ শেখাটা আর শেষ হলো না। গত বৃহস্পতিবার (১৮ জুলাই) সন্ধ্যায় যাত্রাবাড়ী ফ্লাইওভারের পাশে কোটা সংস্কার আন্দোলনকারীদের সঙ্গে পুলিশের সংঘর্ষের সময় গুলিতে ঝাঁঝরা হয় তার শরীর। আবদুল কাইয়ুমের গ্রামের বাড়ি নোয়াখালীর বেগমগঞ্জ উপজেলার নরোত্তমপুর ইউনিয়নের নরোত্তমপুর গ্রামে। সপ্তম শ্রেণি পর্যন্ত পড়ালেখা করা আবদুল কাইয়ুম ছয় মাস আগে কাজ শিখতে ঢাকায় গিয়েছিল। স্বপ্ন ছিল কাজ শিখে পরিবারের হাল ধরবে। কিন্তু এর আগেই সে বাড়ি ফিরল লাশ হয়ে।

Seventeen-year-old Abdul Kauium Ahad was neither involved in politics nor was a student of any school or madrasa. He left his village for the capital Dhaka before passing his secondary education due to the pressure of making a living. In Jatrabari, he learned how to repair refrigerators and air conditioners, but he could not finish his training. On the last Thursday (18 July) evening, during the clash between the protesters demanding reforms in the quota system and the police near Jatrabari flyover, his body was riddled with bullets. Abdul Kauium's village home is in Narottampur village of Narottampur Union in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali. After completing his class seven, Abdul Kauium went to Dhaka six months ago to learn a trade. He had dreams of supporting his family after learning the trade, but instead, his dead body was brought back home.
