'রাতে খাওয়ার পর আমাকে বিভিন্ন ভিডিও দেখায়। বলছিল দেশে কী হচ্ছে, কতজন গুলিবিদ্ধ হচ্ছে। আমি ওসব দেখে বললাম—তুই আন্দোলনে যাস না। যদি যাস, আমাকে নিয়েই যাবি। সে বলে, ‘তোমার তো অ্যাজমা, তুমি পারবে না।’ মেয়ে শিমু বলেছিল, ‘তুমি একদিন মা’কে নিয়ে যেতা আন্দোলন দেখতে।’ সেদিন এই কথাগুলোই ছিল আমাদের শেষ গল্প।”

রুপালী আক্তার আরও বলেন, '১৯ জুলাই সকালে আমার ছোট ভাই বলল, দেশের অবস্থা ভালো না, রিয়াদকে দেখে রাখিস। ওইদিন ছিল শুক্রবার। রিয়াদ বলে, ‘মা, আমি নামাজে যাচ্ছি।’ গোসল করে আতর মেখে পাঞ্জাবি পরে। আমি তাকে মসজিদের জন্য টাকা দিই আর বলি, নামাজ শেষে বাসায় ফিরে আসবি, দেরি করিস না।'

'নামাজ শেষ হওয়ার সময় হলে আবার ফোন করি। সে জানায়, ‘মা, আমার দাওয়াত আছে, খেয়ে আসব।’ বিকাল ৩টার দিকে ফোন দিই— কখনও ধরে, আবার কখনও ধরে না। ৫টা ৩২ মিনিটে আবার বলি, ‘বাবা, ফিরে আয়, তোমার বাবা বাসায় চলে এসেছে।’ সে বলে, ‘সন্ধ্যার মধ্যে চলে আসব, মা। আমি এলাকাতেই আছি।’

'সন্ধ্যা ৬টা ২৩ মিনিটে আবার ফোন করি। তিন সেকেন্ড কথা হয়—ওপাশে কোনো শব্দ নেই। শুধু আমি বলি, ‘বাবা, তাড়াতাড়ি বাসায় আয়।’ এরপর বহুবার ফোন দিই, কিন্তু ফোন বন্ধ পাই। শুরু হয় উদ্বেগ।'

এরপর ঘটে সেই বিভীষিকাময় ঘটনা। রুপালী বলেন, 'পরে জানতে পারি, এই ফোনালাপের ৫-৭ মিনিটের মধ্যেই বাংলাদেশ আধুনিক মেডিকেলের সামনে গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়ে মারা যায় রিয়াদ।'

Rubali Akter also said, 'On the morning of July 19, my younger brother said the situation in the country wasn't good, and I should keep an eye on Riad. It was a Friday. Riad said, "Mom, I'm going to pray." He took a bath, applied perfume, and wore a panjabi. I gave him money for the mosque and told him to come home after praying and not to be late.'

'When it was time for the prayer to end, I called him again. He said, "Mom, I have a dinner invitation, I'll eat and come." I called him at around 3 pm - sometimes the call would connect, and sometimes it wouldn't. At 5:32 pm, I said, "Baba, come back, your father is home." He said, "I'll come before evening, mom. I'm in the area."'

'At 6:23 pm, I called him again. We talked for three seconds - there was no sound on the other end. All I said was, "Baba, come home quickly." After that, I called him many times, but his phone was off. I started to get worried.'

Then, the horrific incident occurred. Rubali said, 'Later, I found out that within 5-7 minutes of our last phone call, Riad was shot and killed in front of the Bangladesh Modern Medical College.'
