বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলনে নিহত মেহেদীর বাবা-মার স্বপ্ন ছিল ছেলে ইঞ্জিনিয়ার হবে। বাবা-মায়ের মুখ উজ্জ্বল করবে। সেই স্বপ্ন স্বৈরাচারী শেখ হাসিনার পেটুয়া বাহিনীর গুলিতে ধূলিসাৎ হয়ে গেল। আর তাদের স্বপ্ন স্বপ্নই রয়ে গেল। একমাত্র ছেলেকে হারিয়ে এখন বাবা-মা দিশেহারা। পরিবারের একমাত্র নাতির জন্য কাদঁতে কাদঁতে নানির চোখের জল শুকিয়ে গেছে। ঘটনার প্রায় পাঁচ মাস পরও নানি অপেক্ষায় থাকেন কখন আসবে নাতি, নানি বলে ডাক দেবে। নিম্নবিত্ত পরিবারের একমাত্র সন্তান ছিল মো. মেহেদী (২০)। বেঁচে থাকার জন্য শিক্ষাজীবন থেকেই জীবনযুদ্ধে নেমে পড়েন তিনি। বৈষম্যহীন সমাজ গড়তে আন্দোলনে রাস্তায় নেমে আসেন মেহেদী। মাথায় গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়ে পিচঢালা রাস্তায় রক্ত ছড়িয়ে চলে যান পরপারে। ইঞ্জিনিয়ার হয়ে বাবা মার মুখ উজ্জ্বল করতে না পারলেও গর্বিত করেছেন পরিবার আর এলাকাবাসীকে। শহীদ মেহেদীর বাড়িতে পরিবারের সদস্যদের সঙ্গে বাসস সংবাদদাতার কথা হয়। তার পিতা মো. সানাউল্লাহ বাসসকে জানান, এক পুত্র ও এক কন্যার মধ্যে মেহেদী ছিলেন ছোট। বড় বোন নির্জনাকে বিয়ে দিয়েছেন। নিজে বসুন্ধরা গ্রুপের পেপার মিলে তৃতীয় শ্রেণির কর্মচারী হিসেবে কাজ করেন। পৈতৃক বাড়ি মুন্সীগঞ্জ জেলার গজারিয়া উপজেলার রায়পাড়া গ্রামে। থাকেন নারায়ণগঞ্জ জেলার সোনারগাঁও উপজেলার পিরোজপুর ইউনিয়নের ঝাউচর গ্রামে শ্বশুরবাড়িতে। জন্মের পর থেকে মেহেদী নানির বাড়িতে বড় হন। স্থানীয় গজারিয়া প্রাইভেট ইনস্টিটিউট অব সায়েন্স অ্যান্ড টেকনোলজিতে দ্বিতীয় বর্ষের ছাত্র ছিলেন। সোনারগাঁও শিল্পনগর উচ্চ বিদ্যালয় থেকে এসএসসি পাস করেন তিনি। শোকে কাতর মেহেদীর মা শিল্পি বেগম বলেন, গত ২০ জুলাই দুপুরে মেহেদী খেতে আসবে বলে চলে যায়। সবার সঙ্গে আন্দোলন করতে গিয়ে আদরের একমাত্র ছেলে লাশ হয়ে এলো। পুলিশের গুলিতে আমার বাবার মাথার মগজ পর্যন্ত বের হয়ে গেছে। চুরমার হয়ে গেছে আমাদের স্বপ্ন। কী দোষ করেছিল মেহেদী? কেন ওকে গুলি করে মারলো? যারা আমার সন্তানকে মেরেছে তাদের বিচার করতে হবে। আমি তাদের বিচার চাই। শহীদ মেহেদীর পিতা বলেন, বিকাল ৫টায় নারায়ণগঞ্জের চিটাগাং রোডে ডাচ-বাংলা ব্যাংকের পেছনে হিরাঝিল আবাসিক এলাকায় রাস্তায় মাথায় গুলিবিদ্ধ হয় মেহেদি। গুলিতে মাথার মগজ পেছন দিক দিয়ে বের হয়ে যায়। সন্ধ্যা ৭টায় মেহেদীর মোবাইল থেকে অপরিচিত একজন বলে আপনার সন্তান চিটাগাং রোডে গুলি খেয়েছে। আমি নারায়ণগঞ্জে চিটাগাং রোডে গিয়ে দেখি আমার একমাত্র সন্তান রাস্তার ওপর পড়ে আছে। মাথায় গুলি লাগায় মগজ পেছন দিক দিয়ে বের হয়ে গেছে। এলাকার লোকজন পলিথিন দিয়ে সন্তানকে ঢেকে রেখেছিল। পুলিশ শুধু গুলিই করেনি, মৃত সন্তানের শরীরেও লাথি মারে। ওই দিন রাতেই সন্তানের লাশ ঝাউচরে নিয়ে আসি এবং জানাজা শেষে স্থানীয় সামাজিক কবরস্থানে দাফন করি। ঝাউচরে মেহেদীর ঘরে টেবিলের ওপর বইগুলো সুন্দর ভাবে সাজানো আছে। বইগুলো দেখে, আর মা চোখের পানি মোছে। মেহেদীর কথা বলতেই নানি চোখের পানি ধরে রাখতে পারেননি। চোখের পানি মুছতে মুছতে এ সংবাদদাতাকে বলেন, আদরের নাতি ছিল আমাদের পরিবারের একমাত্র পুত্রসন্তান। এক ছেলে তিন মেয়ের মধ্যে বড় মেয়ের ঘরের একমাত্র পুত্র সন্তান ছিল মেহেদী। ছোট কাল থেকে কোলে পিঠে করে বড় করেছি। যারা আমার নাতিকে খুন করেছে আল্লাহ যেন তাদের বিচার করে। মেহেদীর বড় বোন নির্জনা বলেন, ছোট ভাই ছিল আমাদের পরিবারের সবার আদরের। পড়াশোনায় ভালো ছিল। পঞ্চম শ্রেণিতে জিপিএ ৫ পেয়েছিল। বড় হয়ে ইঞ্জিনিয়ার হবার ইচ্ছে ছিল। তাই অভাব অনটনের সংসারেও বাবা ভাইকে ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং পড়ার জন্য জিষ্টে ভর্তি করায়। টিউশনি করে পড়া লেখার খরচ চালাত সে। ইঞ্জিনিয়ার হয়ে পরিবারের মুখ উজ্জ্বল করতে চেয়েছিল। আন্দোলনে গিয়ে জীবন দিয়ে আমাদের এখন অন্ধকারে ফেলে চলে গেল। ঝাউচরের মেহেদীর বন্ধু কামাল বলেন, লেখাপড়ার পাশপাশি সে ভালো ছবি আঁকত। আমরা এলাকায় একসঙ্গে খেলাধুলা করতাম। সবার সঙ্গে ভালো সম্পর্ক ছিল মেহেদীর। শহীদ মেহেদীর পিতা বলেন, ছেলেকে হারিয়েছি। আর কোনো দিন ফিরে পাবো না। রাষ্ট্র যাতে এদের ভুলে না যায়, রাষ্ট্রীয় মর্যাদা দেয় এ দাবি করি। মেহেদীর পিতা জানান, জুলাই শহীদ স্মৃতি ফাউন্ডেশন থেকে পাঁচ লাখ টাকা এবং মুন্সীগঞ্জ জেলা প্রশাসন থেকে ১০ হাজার টাকা পেয়েছেন আর্থিক সহায়তা পেয়েছেন তারা।

Although he could not fulfill his parents' dream of becoming an engineer, he made his family and locals proud. In an interview with Mehedi's family, his father, Md. Sanawullah, said that Mehedi was the youngest of two children, with an elder sister, Nirjana, who is married. Sanawullah works as a third-class employee at the Basundhara Group's paper mill. The family's ancestral home is in Munshiganj's Gazaria upazila, but they live in Narayanganj's Sonargaon upazila. Mehedi was raised at his grandmother's house since birth. He was a second-year student at the Gazaria Private Institute of Science and Technology. He passed his SSC from Sonargaon Shilpnagar High School. Mehedi's mother, Shilpi Begum, said that on July 20, Mehedi told her that he would come home to eat. But he was killed during the protest. The police shot him, and his brain came out from the back of his head. The family's dream was shattered. What was Mehedi's fault? Why was he killed? Those who killed my child must be punished. Mehedi's father said that his son was shot in the head on Chittagong Road in Narayanganj. The police not only shot him but also kicked his dead body. The family brought Mehedi's body back to their home in Jhauchar and buried him in the local cemetery. In Mehedi's room, his books are neatly arranged on the table. His mother wipes away her tears as she looks at the books. Mehedi's grandmother cannot hold back her tears as she talks about him. Mehedi's elder sister, Nirjana, said that her younger brother was loved by everyone in the family. He was a good student and wanted to become an engineer. He worked as a tutor to support his education. He participated in the protest and gave his life, leaving the family in darkness. Mehedi's friend, Kamal, said that he was a good artist and played well with everyone in the area. Mehedi's father demands that the state should not forget his son's sacrifice and give him a state funeral. Mehedi's family received financial assistance of Tk 5 lakh from the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation and Tk 10,000 from the Munshiganj district administration.
