জুলাই আন্দোলনের সম্মুখসারিতে ছিল রিতা আক্তার। স্বপ্ন ছিল চিকিৎসক হয়ে দেশের সেবা করার পাশাপাশি পরিবারের হাল ধরার। ৫ আগস্ট গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়ে শহীদ হয় এই তরুণী। ফলে তার স্বপ্ন স্বপ্নই রয়ে গেল। রিতার বাড়ি জয়পুরহাটের কালাই উপজেলার পুনট ইউনিয়নের তালখুর গ্রামে। তার বয়স হয়েছিল ১৭ বছর। বাবা আশরাফ আলী রিকশাচালক। মা রেহেনা বিবি গৃহিণী। তিন ভাই-বোনের মধ্যে সে ছিল মেঝ। পড়াশোনায় ভালো হওয়ায় রিতা ছিল পরিবারের একমাত্র আশা-ভরসা। রিতার পরিবারের সঙ্গে কথা বলে জানা যায়, সে বাবা-মাকে সব সময় বলত, বড় হয়ে ডাক্তার হবে, পরিবারের হাল ধরবে। মেয়েকে একটু ভালোমতো পড়াশোনার সুযোগ তৈরি করে দিতে সাধ্যের সব চেষ্টা চালাতেন বাবা-মা। মা রেহেনা বিবি বাসাবাড়িতে কাজ করে আয়ের সেই টাকায় মেয়ের পড়ালেখার খরচ চালাতেন। রেহেনা বিবি বেদনাহত কণ্ঠে বলেন, মেয়েকে আর ফিরে পাব না জানি। কিন্তু আমার মেয়েসহ বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র-জনতার আন্দোলনে নিহত সবাই যেন শহীদি মর্যাদা পায়। তাহলে মেয়েকে হারানোর বেদনা কিছুটা হলেও লাঘব হবে। গ্রামের মাদরাসা থেকে দাখিল পাস করে এ বছরই ঢাকার মিরপুর দুয়ারীপাড়া সরকারি কলেজে একাদশ শ্রেণিতে ভর্তি হয়েছিল সে। মেয়ের লেখাপড়ার সুবিধার্থে পরিবারের সবাই ঢাকায় চলে আসি।
Cause
গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়ে। আন্দোলনে থাকাকালিন,মাথায় গুলি লাগে। শহীদ সোহরাওয়ার্দী মেডিকেল হাসপাতালে চিকিৎসাধীন অবস্হায় সেই দিনই সন্ধা আনুমানিক ৬ টায় ইন্তেকাল করেন।

Rita Akhtar was at the forefront of the July movement. She had a dream of serving the country as a doctor and taking care of her family. This young girl was martyred after being shot on August 5. As a result, her dreams remained just dreams. Rita's home is in the Talukhur village of Punt Union in Kalai Upazila of Joypurhat. She was 17 years old. Her father, Ashraf Ali, is a rickshaw puller, and her mother, Rehena Bibi, is a housewife. Among three siblings, she was the middle one. Since Rita was good at studying, she was the only hope for her family. Talking to Rita's family reveals that she used to tell her parents all the time that she would become a doctor when she grew up and take care of the family. Her parents tried their best to create opportunities for her to study. Her mother, Rehena Bibi, worked in the house and used the earnings to support Rita's education. Rehena Bibi said in a sorrowful voice, "I know I won't get my daughter back, but I hope that my daughter and all the students who were killed in the anti-discrimination movement get martyr status. If that happens, the pain of losing my daughter will be slightly alleviated." Rita had passed her Dakhil exam from a madrasa in the village and was admitted to the 11th grade at Dhaka's Mirpur Duaripara Government College this year. For the convenience of her daughter's education, the whole family had moved to Dhaka.
Cause
Shot dead. While participating in the movement, he was shot in the head. He died at around 6 pm on the same day while undergoing treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical Hospital.
