‘আমার সন্তান কি কেউ দিতে পারবে। না সন্তানের মতো কিছু হবে আর। সন্তান চলে গেছে। সন্তান চাইলে কি আর সন্তান দিতে পারবে। ছোট ছেলেটিকে যেকোনো একটা কাজ দিলে সেও চলতে পারতো, আমাদেরও চালাতে পারতো। তবে আমার ছেলেকে যারা গুলি করে মারছে, তাদের বিচার চাই।’

এভাবেই কান্না জড়িত কণ্ঠে কথাগুলো বলছিলেন বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলনের সময় ঢাকায় গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়ে মারা যাওয়া আব্দুর রউফের (২৭) এর মা সুলতানা বেগম। গত ১৮ জুলাই ঢাকার উত্তরায় সহিংসতার ঘটনায় সন্ধ্যা ৬টার দিকে গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়ে কুয়েত মৈত্রী হাসপাতালে মারা যান রউফ। পরদিন দুপুর ১১টার দিকে নিজ জেলা নীলফামারী সদরের কচুকাটা ইউনিয়নের দোনদরী মাঝাপাড়া পারিবারিক কবরস্থানে আব্দুর রউফের দাফন সম্পন্ন হয়।

রউফ ওই গ্রামের ইউনুছ আলী (৫৮) ও সুলতানা বেগম (৫০) দম্পতির ছেলে। বাবা ইউনুছ আলী পেশায় একজন রাজমিস্ত্রি। পরিবারে দুই ভাই এক বোনের মধ্যে আব্দুর রউফ সবার বড়। তার আয়ে পরিবার ও ছোট ভাইয়ের পড়ালেখা চলে। বিয়ে হয়েছে বোন রিমু আক্তারের (২২)। সবার ছোটভাই সাকিব হাসান (২০)। এইচএসসি পাসের পর উচ্চ শিক্ষা গ্রহণে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ভর্তির চেষ্টা করছেন। ছোট ভাইয়ের পড়ার খরচ ও পরিবারের অভাব মেটাতে আব্দুর রউফ বেছে নেন গাড়ি চালকের কাজ। এজন্য তিনি রাজধানী ঢাকার উত্তরায় থাকতেন। ছেলে হারানোর শোকে রউফের বাবা-মা এখন দিশাহারা, চোখে-মুখে অন্ধকার দেখছেন তারা।

জেলা শহর থেকে প্রায় ১০ কিলোমিটার দূরে আব্দুর রউফের বাড়িতে গিয়ে দেখা যায়, মা সুলতানা বেগম এখনো তার ঘরে ছেলেকে খুঁজছেন। ভাঙা-চোরা টিনের ঘরের বাঁশের বেড়া ধরে দরজায় দাঁড়িয়ে ছেলের অপেক্ষায় ফ্যালফ্যাল করে চেয়ে থাকেন সকাল-সন্ধ্যা। ঘটনার এক মাসের বেশি সময় পেরিয়ে গেলেও এখনো শোকে মুহ্যমান তার পরিবারের সদস্যরা। শোক ছড়িয়ে পড়েছে প্রতিবেশীদের মাঝেও।

মা সুলতানা বেগম বলেন, যেদিন গুলি খাইছে তার আগের দিন কথা হইছে। সে দিনের বেলা একবার, রাতের বেলা একবার ফোন দেয়। যেদিন গুলি খাইছে সেদিন আমার সঙ্গে কোনো কথা হয় নাই। আমার ফোনে কল দিছিল আমি রিসিভ করি নাই। পরের দিন দেখেছি যে অমুক টাইমে গতকাল সে ফোন দিছিল। আমার জামাইকে ফোন দিছে। বেটিকে ফোন দিছে, আমার নাতির সঙ্গে কথা কইছে, ছোট ছেলের সঙ্গে কথা কইছে। আমারে সঙ্গে কথা হয় নাই আর ওর আব্বার সঙ্গে কথা হয় নাই। আমার ছেলে তো আমার সম্পদ আছিল। ১০ থেকে ১১ বছর ধরে চাকরি করে ঢাকায়। সম্পদ আমার নাই, চলে গেছে। প্রত্যেক মাসে ২০ হাজার করে টাকা দেয়। তার নিজের জন্য কোনো ক্যাশ করে নাই। সংসারেই দিছে, মেয়েকে বিয়ে দিয়েছে, ছোট ছেলেটার লেখাপড়ার খরচ দেয়। আমার সংসার চালায়। আমারদের ওষুধ পাতি যা কিছু লাগে সব দেয়। ছেলে মারা যাওয়ার পর আমরা এতো অস্থির হয়ে গেছি। আমরা যে মানুষগুলো চলবো তার কোনো ব্যবস্থা নাই। ছোট ছেলে তো লেখাপড়া করে সে তো কোনো কাজ করতে পারবে না। এখন আমি কি করে চলবো। আমাদের দুজনের প্রতিমাসে ৫ থেকে ৬ হাজার টাকার ওষুধ লাগে।

রউফের বাবা ইউনুছ আলী বলেন, দিনমজুর হওয়ার কারণে ছেলেকে বেশি পড়ালেখা করাতে পারিনি। সংসারে অভাবে থাকায় সে ঢাকায় গাড়ি চালিয়ে আমাদের সংসার চালাত। মেয়েটিকে বিয়ে দিছে সে, ছোট ছেলেটিকে পড়ালেখা করিয়েছে। প্রতি মাসে ২০ হাজার টাকা পাঠাতো। সেই টাকা দিয়ে আমার পরিবার চলতো। ছেলের মৃত্যুর সঙ্গে আমার সব স্বপ্ন মরে গেছে। তাকে ছাড়া আমি এখন বাঁচবো কীভাবে? আমার ছেলে দেশের জন্য জীবন দিলো, কিন্তু কেউ আমাদের খোঁজ নিতে আসেনি।

ছোট ভাই সাকিব বলেন, গত ১৮ জুলাই দুপুরে মুঠোফোনে ভাইয়ের সঙ্গে (রউফ) আমার কথা হয়েছিল। তিনি পরিবারের সকলের খোঁজ-খবর নিয়েছিলেন। সে সময়ের পরিস্থিতি সম্পর্কে তিনি আমাকে সতর্ক করেছিলেন। এরপর সন্ধ্যায় নিজেই হারিয়ে গেলেন আন্দোলনে গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়ে।

কচুকাটা ইউনিয়ন পরিষদের চেয়ারম্যান আব্দুর রউফ চৌধুরী বলেন, ওই ছেলে এলাকায় সহজ সরল হিসেবে পরিচিত ছিল। সে ঢাকার উত্তরায় একটি প্রতিষ্ঠানে ড্রাইভার হিসেবে চাকরি করতো। গত ১৮ জুলাই সন্ধ্যায় গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়ে ঢাকাতেই মারা যায়। তার বাবা-মা দুজনই অসুস্থ, তার একটি ছোট ভাই রয়েছে।

My child, what can I give now. Nothing like a child will happen again. My child is gone. If I had a child, could I have given it. If I had given any work to the little boy, he could have run, we could have run. But I want justice for those who shot my son.

These words were spoken by Sultan Begum, the mother of Abdur Rauf (27), who was shot and killed during the anti-discrimination student protest in Dhaka. On July 18, Rauf was shot in the evening in Uttara, Dhaka, and died at Kuwait Friendship Hospital. The next day, at around 11 am, Rauf was buried in the family graveyard in Donddari Mazhapara, Kochukata Union, Nilphamari Sadar.

Rauf was the son of Yunus Ali (58) and Sultan Begum (50) from that village. His father, Yunus Ali, is a day laborer. Among the two brothers and one sister, Abdur Rauf was the eldest. His income and that of his family and younger brother's education were all dependent on him. His sister, Rimu Akter (22), is married, and the youngest brother, Sakib Hassan (20), is still studying after passing his HSC exams. Abdur Rauf chose to work as a driver to support his family and pay for his younger brother's education. For this reason, he lived in Uttara, Dhaka.

After losing their son, Rauf's parents are now lost and in darkness. Visiting their home in the village, about 10 kilometers from the district town, it can be seen that the mother, Sultan Begum, is still waiting for her son in their broken and tin-roofed house. She stands by the door, looking out, waiting for her son, from morning to evening. Even after a month has passed since the incident, the family members are still grieving. The sorrow has also spread to the neighbors.

Sultan Begum said, "The day before he was shot, we talked on the phone. He called once in the daytime and once at night. The day he was shot, we didn't talk at all. I didn't receive his call. Later, I saw that he had called the previous day at a certain time. He talked to my son-in-law, my granddaughter, and my younger son, but not with me or his father. My son was my asset, and I didn't have any other assets. He worked in Dhaka for 10-11 years, sending 20,000 taka every month. He didn't keep any money for himself; he spent it all on the family, got his sister married, and paid for his younger brother's education. He ran our household and provided for our medical expenses. Now, after his death, we are restless and don't know how we will manage."

Rauf's father, Yunus Ali, said, "As a day laborer, I couldn't afford to educate my son properly. Due to our poverty, he went to Dhaka to work as a driver and support our family. He got his sister married and educated his younger brother. Every month, he sent 20,000 taka. With that money, our family survived. After his death, all my dreams are shattered. How will I live now? My son gave his life for the country, but no one has come to ask about us."

The younger brother, Sakib, said, "On July 18, I talked to my brother on the phone in the afternoon. He asked about everyone in the family and warned me about the situation at that time. After that, he himself got lost in the protest and was shot."

Abdur Rauf Chowdhury, the chairman of the Kochukata Union Council, said, "That boy was known in the area as a simple and honest person. He worked as a driver in an organization in Uttara, Dhaka. On the evening of July 18, he was shot and died in Dhaka. His parents are both ill, and he has a younger brother."
